Bill in Place to Move Marijuana Away from Casinos in Nevada

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) desires the state to regulate its ever-growing legal marijuana industry, calling for possible cannabis lounges to be located well away from casinos, churches, universities, and mosques, as well as parks and schools.

The new bill: AB533, focuses on pushing any future pot lounges to at least 300 feet away from houses of worship, parks, schools, public pools, and entertainment facilities. The bill also necessitates that cannabis is located at least 1,000 feet away from a school. And pushes that figure even further — to 1,500 feet away — from casinos, according to Todd Shriber.

In May, the Las Vegas City Council voted 4-1 in favor of opening marijuana consumption lounges within city limits. The city of Las Vegas does not include The Strip, which is located in a distinct part of Clark County, according to Joe Nelson and Abby Theodros. This original ruling said they would have to be 1,000 feet away from casinos and schools, but the new AB533 pushes that back to 1,500 feet.

Some experts want to move marijuana away from casinos, emphasizing the potentially thorny legal issues that could arise if cannabis and gaming properties mix.

According to the president of the Nevada Resort Association (NRA), some of the group members are holding a gaming license in states where marijuana still banned and that violating gaming control board policies or federal law could lead to heavy fines or even loss of licenses.

An amendment to AB533 presented by the NRA goes further by looking to inflate the 1,500 feet away casinos section to all cannabis dispensaries, not just consumption lounges.

Tourism Industry:

Tourism, as well as recreation, may be a major driver of Nevada’s economy. The business employs 450,000 within the state and accounts for over 37% of the revenue that goes into the overall fund, consistent with Valentine.

In August 2018 — around the time of the primary day of recreational cannabis being legalized within the American state — the Nevada Department of Taxation said that the weed generated nearly $70 million in government revenue or 140% quite it expected. That’s a decent beginning, however as compared to the quite $711 million Nevada vice operators contributed to the state’s general fund in commercial enterprise 2018.

The Nevada Department of Taxation generated approx. $70 million in tax revenue, or 140 percent more than it expected. Nevada currently has a 10% eliminate a tax on marijuana sales, which is directed to the state’s rainy day fund. But Sisolak and other Democratic leaders recently revealed a plan to utilize sales tax in the education funding. Currently, only the 15% wholesale tax Nevada levies on cannabis are aimed at education.

The State’s Revenue-Generating Potential:

The very first marijuana dispensary was open in 2015, and then it’s become a growing and an effective Nevada business story. The topped rated sales within 12 months of recreational and medical marijuana and marijuana-related goods are $529 million. The taxes collected by the state is $69.8 million and the Nevada Department of Taxation is forecasting a similar tax figure next year.

The taxation department said that the 61 dispensaries were working in statewide, 47 of those in Clark Country, which includes the casino. Recent law restricts marijuana consumption to private residences.
